My son just got his trumpet at band camp today, and ...?
...is there a right time and place to practice this lovely and LOUD horn? We don't have a basement here. lol

well, i guess you saw that electric guitar i got my son for xmas. there is a certain amount of insanity that i am willing to put up with, but we at long last had to set ground rules about when he could play it. ours may be different than yours, but ours are absolutely no amplifiers after 9 p.m. and no non-amplifier after 10 p.m. also, no early morning jam sessions. we don't have a basement either. so, just enjoy the noise, soon they grow up and are gone, and we will miss that glorious cacaphony, lol

Some might say to put in a root celler, while others might say to use the band room at school either 1 hour before school, or 1 hour after... I would say let him decide where he gets the most comments of the kind he is looking for, he seems like he has a good mind. He can make a room more sound proof by hanging blankets a few inches from the walls. They even have an electric horn now, though I believe he has yet to go into mass production.

PS to the Big Mr. D, Jazz & R+B are where its at!!!!!!!!!

I converted a large closet to a tiny practice room. No one can hear me, I live with my girlfriend in an apartment in a large city and I've never gotten a complaint.
Completely clear out the closet, and if it doesn't have a light already, run an extension chord under the door and put a small lamp in. Then cover the walls with any material - egg cartons, thick heavy blankets, etc. Or you can purchase some sound proofing. Then he can go in there and play to his hearts content.
Get him some private trumpet lessons if you want him to sound better and get more out of it. Otherwise you'll likely end up wasting time and money.

Surely someone has invented a solution in the form of a muffler that quits the horn when practicing, hang on going see if I can find a link....
yeah ok go to a music store and look for one of these.

Just buy him a trumpet mute. If you don't really wanna spend the money, get your regular good ol brown paper bag, ball it up, and stuff it in the bell. Or you could do the same with a sock.
