Classic rock and some of today's teens: I'm sorry, but I must get this out?

I know this has been asked a million times, but I must add my bit.

Why do certain people of the younger generation discredit certain bands because of their age?

I just recently read an answer that practically discredit Deep Purple because it was part of the "old generation". If a band sings about themes that we can all relate to, why shove it away just because it was written before you were born? If it's good, it's good, and common themes amoung classic rock such as rebellion, greed, insanity, love etc are still common themes that you can relate to today, isn't it? And they are the founding fathers of rock, where do you think the bands you listen to get their influences from?

Shouldn't being older and STILL being popular and relevent today be a GOOD thing and not something to shun?

Update:

How Soon Is Now?: Well, I guess those people like the "image" and not really the bands... and you really have to be living in a cave to not know who Bowie is, like him or not, he's a legend.

Update 2:

How Soon is Now?: Kids these days...

flutterbypurr: Then I get to sit back, laugh at them and say "I told you so", can't wait!

Update 3:

Sambang: LOL, it's fine not to like them, everyone has different taste, but it's not reconizing these bands as the founding fathers of rock and great bands that bother me. And I for one listen to plenty of modern rock.

Update 4:

Persephone: U2 is not old!!! You either!!! I actually consider U2 modern rock, but hey, that's just me. I can't speak for my generation.

Shizzle Bizzle: Yes, wanting the "image" is always part of the problem. I actually don't want the image of a Floyd fan aka druggie, but I'm not going to base the music I love on what i want people to think of me.

Sabes: I didn't grow up on classic rock, I picked it up myself, and from that perspective, to think so many people grew up on great music only to shun it because their parents liked it.

I get exactly what you mean.. As you MIGHT know - i am quite young myself.

Interestingly, i was having this argument with an MCR fan who though MCR is punk and asked me to name some punk bands. I sayed the Sex Pistols... and throughout the whole argument she kept or resorting to 'But you listen to music for grandads.'

A problem with todays teens (generally) is that they listen to music to fit in or be cool.. Whether they are the geeks, the jocks or even emos.

If the rockstar doesnt look 'hawt' anymore - their band is instantly shunned by many teens.

If the sound isnt produced and not been edited many times (like most modern bands) and sounds a wincy bit rough around the edges -its considered 'old'..

Ive said this before - listening to music should completely depend on taste.. it shouldnt depend on to be cool etc.. By saying cool i mean it both ways.. Some younguns wont listen to older music to be cool .. some young ones WILL listen to classic rock to sound more intellectual and knowledgable.

Music to me as an escape .. something i can relate to.. I listen to music from all ages.. The Clash's, sex pistols'

music is something i can still relate to.. Deep Purple - so much not.. I can relate to Iron maiden's music, even chuck berry's but not Black Sabbath's.. i listen to music which i can relate to - nothing to do with the band's age or when they come from..

And thats something modern day teen's should get over.

    G'day sarah.

Most of the younger people I know think Green Day is old. I find that funny since they came out when I was about 3.

I grew up listening to older bands. Most of them tour today and I really love going to their concerts but I do get crap from teens about my music. They say only old people can go. I disagree many songs are appealing and sound better.

It's also helpful that at my school, there is a club that is dedicated to the Beatles, we had celebration for John's Birthday. I find it encouraging knowing that many of my peers have some music in common because beyond the Beatles we really don't listen to the same bands. Classic rock strangely reunites people whom in the first place would never really have anything in common.

i think you'll find the attitude you are speaking of more in the rock and pop arena than others. For example, when I look at Jazz or Blues or Folk or Roots music, i see the tendency for the young to respect (if not venerate) those that came before.

And also --- I find that the "tastes" of those R&P kids who discount what was recorded in an earlier time to be pretty shallow. You have seen answers for this question already from 'younger' folks who very much have their ears to the ground for what is current, BUT they like and respect the artists who laid the foundation for the current scene. Also, though I am 53, I do like and buy some very current bands. You'll find some bands like The Hold Steady and the Shins and so forth on my shelf with the other stuff.

Just my opinion...I think young girls are more influenced by the bands "look" or what's "cool". Young boys want to look or act like the bands of today. Same thing. The young set (me included) went NUTS over the Beatles partly because they had long hair and seemed radical. Same for Elvis the Pelvis.I'd bet if music vid hadn't come along the most revered bands of old would still be Gods today.Or if you blindfold a kid who had never heard music before they would automatically gravitate to the old Classic Rock Masters.

I agree with How Soon is Now? I know a lot of kids who like classic rock. I myself, 15, a diehard Pink Floyd fan. And the same goes for that Dark Side of the Moon comment, it's not a song! name another song on that album random fake Pink Floyd fan. (By the way I'm currently rockin my Animals T-Shirt, listened to that album twice full today). But I also know a lot of people that like the newer crappier "rock" like Dispatch, Phish, DMB, Jack Johnson and John Mayer. Those kids don't even have respect for the bands that made the music they ruined popular (if that makes much sense). I try to make them understand and introduce them to the earlier better years of rock but they just start bro-ing out to they're Dispatch.

    Sickens me....

i think i might understand this idea better than most considering my age and the fact that most of the music i like was made before i was born...it's ridiculous that young kids discount the ability of a band because they're "old", and it's sad that few of them realize not only their musical talent but also the influence they had on bands that are around today(the limited number of good ones anyway)...if kids had the capability to understand the impact of these bands, then there might be more widespread popularity of classic rock bands, and also there might be fewer classic rock bands trying to make comebacks today by adjusting their music to today's demand, because more of their old stuff would be selling better

I know!!I'm in middle school and I absolutely Luv The Beatles and alot of older generation music and I ask almost everyone that I know do u kno who the Beatles were if if yea do u like them. Most people didn't like em cuz they're to old.One kid even joked about John Lennon's death!!I cused that kid out. Most of the kids at my school who are like me (quiet ,keeps to them selves, get good grades, and promotes peace)liked the Beatles.I listen to music today and like some songs but I have to say my generation just don't kno wat "Good Music" is.Must songs talk about girl's butts and many inappropriate things that r unnecessary.Wat happened to singers talkin about a "happy" relationship, a puppy-love sort of crush, peace, havin a good time with your friends doin nuthin wrong, and remenising on the good times you've had in your life and wishing for more good times.Today everything is so dark.Everything mainly has to be negative.I'm a teen and liked it better in the older times where a person could actually be happy. :-)!!!

I know what you mean, so many people I know don't like bands that I like because they are "bands my dad liked in high school'

    so what?

that doesn't make them any less talented, any less influential!

It doesn't make them less any thing...

I mean...most of today's rock can't hold a candle to some one like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd!

all we can do is hope they wake up and hear the music.

I swear, I hate kids like that.

I know this one girl. I asked her if she ever heard of Metallica. She said they're old, but they're good. She's not a metalhead or anything, but she also likes Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. She's only 14 too. As far as open-mindedness, she has my respect.

Now I know this other girl. She's a big fan of the Jonas Brothers. I asked her the same question. She went "ewww my dad listens to that!"

    LOL Persephone!

Some people just have no sense of history. They think everything today is as it is just.... because...(?)! I honestly don't know what they think....

I have a huge respect for the music I love AND it's roots. But can we educate those who don't want to be educated? I doubt it.

When something like that bugs me I just consider the source. Not everyone's opinion deserves my attention or respect, and everyone is certainly welcome to choose what and who they 'listen' to.

One of my favorite "Classic Albums" off VH1 was the Cream one *because* of getting to listen to Eric Clapton go on and on about the musicians who influenced him. It was lovely. History and respect.
