  • what is jim rice's problem?

i find it impossible to believe that anyone could compare derek jeter to manny ramirez and a-rod in terms of quality of character among baseball players today, but jim rice did just that...he also said he would not put jeter in the hof, which is obviously absurd, naming jim thome(i love jim but he won't go before jeter) ahead of him

i wonder if jim rice goes to bed wondering why he didn't get into the hall sooner because he should know that comments like this are a huge part of why...i always rooted for him to get in, but with these comments i really wish we could take him out now, bashing one of the cleanest, purest players in the game today is just retarded and bad for the game as a whole

  • where does inglourious basterds rank among tarantino's movies?

i'm going out on a limb here and saying that this could be his 2nd best movie ever, falling only to pulp fiction, my personal favorite movie ever...this film is everything i expected and more, and everything that every qt fan has come to expect in his movies: the violence, gore, humor, and sharp wit; but he also adds in some plot twists and turns around his nonlinear story, which is more straightforward than in other movies of his...additionally, it would be a shame if christoph waltz did not get an oscar nomination for his multi-lingual performance as col. hans landa, he is brilliant in no uncertain terms, and brad pitt is as excellent as he always is, his character portrayed smoothly and carved carefully by qt...it's easily my favorite movie of this year so far, and i don't think it would be a stretch to say that it could get a best picture nomination given that there are 10 candidates this year

    what is everyone else's opinion?

  • what did you think of district 9?

i was very surprised, to be honest, about the overwhelmingly positive critical reaction to the movie...obviously the effects were excellent and they managed to add some humor to the plot mainly in the beginning of the movie, but i felt the premise to be a little predictable and silly..perhaps i'm bitter because the previews got me excited for a possible alien vs. human war kind of movie, but i knew for sure once the plot started developing that the focus was on one guy and i knew exactly what would happen to him(those who have seen it know what i'm speaking of, i won't ruin it)

so, what did everyone else think?

  • why won't my computer allow me to install itunes?

ok, so i just got a dell latitude yesterday with a special configuration for the university of scranton which i will be attending in the fall...i was attempting to install itunes on the computer, which at first sight appears to already be installed but in reality when you click the shortcut it prompts a configuration process to begin which always ends in me being told that it cannot write some sort of key...when i try to access the download via the apple website, the download goes fine until i am told during the installation process that it cannot create a temporary folder necessary for the installation before erasing the entire install process

i really don't know a whole lot about computers, so some help here from someone with knowledge would be greatly appreciated

  • r&p: concert review #5!?

i actually forgot about this concert review, this concert took place on monday: lil wayne with openers jeremiah, soulja boy, young jeezy, and some other guy who i don't remember, and a number of special guests from young money records who performed with lil wayne

i didn't even really listen to this concert quite frankly because i am not a big fan of the genre and hold a special amount of hate for wayne and soulja boy, although jeezy has never really bothered me

  • poker players: what do you think about jeff shulman's comments concerning the wsop?

for those who don't know what i'm talking about:

    http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-news/7213-jeff-shu...

there seems to be a pretty inspired debate in the poker world now as to whether or not jeff is disgracing poker by saying he'll renounce the bracelet if he wins, which is apparently the way some people feel...while it would certainly be nice if he went around doing what everyone else would do with that bracelet, if he wins it he's entitled to do what he wants with it, and he wants to make a statement about the way the wsop is run by just not accepting it

in addition, part of the basis for my opinion is that he's right about the way the wsop is run, not all players are treated equally and the series itself has certainly deteriorated in stature from years past in terms of the decisions that are made and the treatment of the players as a whole

    so, 2 questions:

    1. is jeff disrespecting the game in some way by renouncing the bracelet?

    2. are his criticisms reason enough for him to want to do something like this?

  • who do you think will win the wsop main event?

obviously, you have to believe that despite the fact that he's starting 7th in chips, no one at that table will have any edge over phil ivey, he's clearly the best player in the world and far and away the best, most fearsome, and most motivated player at the table...he's been close in this tournament before but has never been this close, and he might be the only player in it who's got no regard for the money at stake(jeff shulman probably fits into this category as well), and you can bet he'll be on a mission to destroy all comers when the time comes...there will be a lot of players at this table getting training in the time between now and the final table but all the training in the world won't give them ivey's experience and instincts...all i know is, if he gets chips to play with and doesn't get unlucky in a big pot, everyone might just want to go home and get out of his way

if forced to pick someone besides phil, jeff shulman has to be the favorite, he's the pro with the most chips and would definitely be the favorite in any circle if ivey weren't at the table with him...he's got a lot of experience and won't be scared of the money, and he's been close in this tournament before as well

so, who does everyone else has the best shot to win this thing?

  • what are your favorite songs by the clash?

i've always been a little disappointed that these guys don't get more love around here...a very musically creative band with a lot of talent, especially in the guitar and songwriting department from joe strummer, and one of the most politically and socially aware bands in music history...perhaps they aren't as respected as they should because they're one of those bands that is almost entirely defined by their hit songs

so, what are everyone's favorite clash songs? here's my list:

    1. clash city rockers

    2. rock the casbah

    3. know your rights

    4. i fought the law

    5. train in vain

    6. bankrobber

    7. this is radio clash

    8. london calling

    9. (white man) in hammersmith palais

    10. complete control

  • r&p: concert review #4!?

time for the 4th concert review of the year: rascal flatts, with opener darius rucker(formerly of hootie and the blowfish)

i have never been a fan of hootie, and darius rucker didn't prove to be any improvement over hootie really...while his band was actually alright, darius was really a pretty bad singer imo, and his songs were just as humdrum and formulaic as his former band's

we had a rascal flatts concert last year that was really more flash and dash than good music, and this year was no exception...while i don't hate rascal flatts, i confirm my opinion that their shows are a little pretentious and more about the impression they give than the music they play, although they get their crowd into it this way

so what is everyone's opinion on rascal or darius rucker or hootie, if you wish

  • what do you think of the wsop's decision to cap the day 1d field?

    http://www.cardplayer.com/poker-news/7145-hundreds...

i think this is actually a pretty interesting argument, and like most cases with issues of the players against wsop staff, i am siding with the players although not as vehemently as i have in the past...i can understand that harrah's allowed registration to begin some 4 months in advance for this tournament and that if someone really wanted the seat that badly they would have made sure to have gotten it, and i understand that they can't take alternates or move to 10 handed tables because it would compromise the tournament's integrity, but i do find it hard to believe that there is no workable solution to this problem, and additionally jeffrey pollack's comment that they have capped wsop events before is complete garbage, those events were the heads-up tournament and the shootouts which are held to a set number of players which all players are made aware of on the schedule

i just find it hard to believe that harrah's hates money enough to just slam the door on at least 500 players and maybe more...and besides that, they're going to have a problem on day 2b when some 4500 people will attempt to squeeze into the amazon room

so what is everyone else's opinion?

  • how much more self-serving can sarah palin get?

i hate to continue on these rants about her, but she may be one of the most ignorant and incompetent public figures i've ever seen...let's pick through the note she left on her facebook, seen here:

    http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=994775384...

"Yesterday, my family and I announced a decision that is in Alaska’s best interest and it always feels good to do what is right."

-or perhaps to do what could make me quite rich in a couple years

"How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."

-maybe this "different standard" applies because you're not making this decision for anyone's benefit besides your own...how exactly is this supposed to do your state any good by causing governmental turmoil?

"I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint,"

-and how do you plan on doing that sarah? by having a position of power? oh wait a minute, you're giving that up, and yet still expecting people to listen to you...wow, just wow

feel free to share comments, on either side of the coin, but i just found this statement to be completely laughable

  • r&p: concert review #3!?

time for our third concert review: styx/reo speedwagon with opener .38 special(i included styx and reo speedwagon together as a co-headline because they played for the same amount of time)

i have never really been a .38 special fan, and they weren't particularly entertaining live...not bad but definitely not blowing the doors off the place

reo speedwagon was very good as i expected them to be, they are a band sort of geared to the whole arena rock deal and a large part of that is playing a solid live show...the only disappointment i had was that they got 2 of my favorite songs of theirs(can't fight this feeling and take it on the run) done within the first 4 songs

styx was surprisingly very good, i was lowering my expectations for them due to the absence of dennis deyoung but james young proved a sufficient replacement, and overall they put on a very good show...my lone gripe here was that even with a limited amount of time to play they killed off some time with instrumental solos, which was cool but it cut out a couple of songs i would have liked to see them perform, but all in all a very solid effort

so, what is your opinion on these three bands?

  • is this the most unbelievably terrible fold you've ever seen?

the actual decision starts around the 1:00 mark of the video and runs almost the entire rest of the way...you should watch especially around the time of his actual fold when getting reactions from the rest of the table, mike matusow's and mike sexton's reactions are really funny

  • r&p: concert review #2!?

second concert of the year this evening, one that i was looking forward to as one of the best shows of the year: def leppard, with openers cheap trick and poison

cheap trick led off the show, and i didn't think they were any better than last year when we saw them touring with journey, and they were disappointing then...while i'm not a big cheap trick fan by any means, i do think they're decent and wish that robin zander's voice wasn't as shot as it seems to be, and that version of don't be cruel makes me want to punch something every time i hear it, i don't know how it became a hit

as for poison, i feel bad for cc deville, caught in a band with 3 total hacks...their performance, for me, began and ended with their rendition of every rose has its thorn

def leppard was better than expected, i came in worrying if joe elliott still had it in him but he sounded as good as ever...they put on one of the better concerts i've ever seen, and they did a cool sing-along to bringin' on the heartbreak which is my favorite song of theirs by far

so, what are your thoughts on these bands?
