xoxo
Hugs and Kisses. O's = Hugs, X's = Kisses. You can just put O's if you haven't shared a kiss with the person yet.
xoxo,
(insert name)
Edit: If you look at each letter like it was representing two people from a bird's eye view, the "O" represents the arms of those persons hugging each other while the "X" is evocative of two people kissing each other.

RE:
When signing a letter with XOXO, what does the X stand for and what does the O stand for?
Silly Turtle [Dont forget about the avocados]
XOXOX is supposed to mean"sending or writing hugs and kisses your way", but not literally.
The X is Hugs
The O is Kisses
You could say "Hugs and Kisses" and sign your name, but people like it this way "XOXOX". I'm not sure who came up this "XOXOX"
People usually write this to their parent or very close friends.

I don't know and I never thought to question it before I came online and saw the "xox" frequently used by Americans. When I was growing up people always used to put "X's" in greetings cards, I was brought up that they were kisses and that was that really. I still end my texts and emails to women and girls with a "x"
