We have a kid in our kindergarten class who is ALWAYS biting his arm when he is stressed out. ?

He is smart but has no attention span for anything. He must stressed out all the time I notice that he does this a lot during circle and seat work time. How can I get him to stop sucking his arm Also we have another kid who suck on his shirt until it is wet and he does this all the
time as well. Now some background about the class it is half day and pretty non academic. So their is no reason for the kids to be so stressed out. Yes he went to school prior to this.

His parents blame the new baby sister the adopted and that he went to MANY pre schools (he was doubt kicked out) He adjusted to MANY new teachers bc/ of the high turn over rates among teachers. We suspect he might have dev.delays as well.

Sib-self injurious behavior, could be an anxiety disorder, could be autistic spectrum, could be sensory integration. The shirt chewer is definately sensory integration, possible autistic spectrum. Both should be evaluated by the school psychologist, and therapists esp. OT. Where it is normal for a baby or toddler to bite themselves, its not normal for a 6 year old. Social situations like circle time are extremely anxiety provoking for anyone on the autistic spectrum, or with an anxiety disorder. Seat work time could be difficult with fine motor delay also.

it's normal...babies/toddlers often bite themselves when frustrated or mad...of course you need to help him learn a new way to express their feelings without hurting someone or themselves..it takes time but they stop doing it after a while...
