Ever heard of a model T Ford? It was the first MASS PRODUCED, affordable automobile in 1908. THAT'S the auto industry. They MADE cars before then, but they didn't mass produce them until 1902, and there was no true industry until 1908. The automobile industry refers to the industry of mass-produced cars, not just making cars.
REALLY? Daimler Benz has been making cars since the 1885? That's truly amazing, considering they weren't founded until 1926. Karl Benz was the inventor and primary producer of the automobile in 1885, NOT Daimler Benz. But he was still not the founder of the automobile INDUSTRY. Only the automobile itself.
Add*: and technically you are wrong again. The assembly line was not ford's innovation. The large-scale, production-line manufacturing of automobiles was debuted by Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory in 1902, but it was expanded on by Henry Ford, who put out cars in 15 minute intervals rather than 13 hour intervals. The Model T Ford is the first car to be mass-produced by the efficient assembly line system and sold to the public at an affordable price. Ford made the car affordable to Americans and THAT is the innovation of the industry.
You're correct in that a German in 1885 is credited with the invention of the automobile. As far as the automobile industry - the mass production and distribution of automobiles - that did indeed begin in Detroit, as Barack Obama said. Ford Motor Company was responsibile for the first assembly line production of automobiles.
Low blow on the 57th state thing by the way. When you're speaking all day, day after day, you flub words. I've used my son's name for my daughter and vice versa. Obviously I know which is which, and clearly Obama knows how many states there are.
