Ever heard of a model T Ford? It was the first MASS PRODUCED, affordable automobile in 1908. THAT'S the auto industry. They MADE cars before then, but they didn't mass produce them until 1902, and there was no true industry until 1908. The automobile industry refers to the industry of mass-produced cars, not just making cars.

The large-scale, production-line manufacturing of automobiles was debuted by Ransom Olds at his Oldsmobile factory in 1902, but it was expanded on by Henry Ford, who put out cars in 15 minute intervals rather than 13 hour intervals. The Model T Ford is the first car to be mass-produced by the efficient assembly line system and sold to the public at an affordable price. Ford made the car affordable to Americans and THAT is the innovation of the industry.

You're correct in that a German in 1885 is credited with the invention of the automobile. As far as the automobile industry - the mass production and distribution of automobiles - that did indeed begin in Detroit, as Barack Obama said. Ford Motor Company was responsibile for the first assembly line production of automobiles.

You're right. They were. But the automation of car making started the industry and Ford did that.
