Why are so many people interested in being famous?

It seems that people, maybe it's simply this website, are interested in simply being famous. They don't want to be good at something or make a difference in society or help others or learn how to spell or use proper grammer....I just don't get it. Why is fame such a big deal? Are we purpetuating this fame ideal with reality TV? Are we training younger generations to be apethetic to the real truth out there in that the US is entering into a recession, the likes of we may have not seen for several generations, and our society can't necessarily support a growing number of completely useless people simply wandering around being famous for the sake of fame? I ask simply b/c I come on this site and get into the Theatre sub-category looking for theatre questions...and all I see are people trying to get famous...so what's the big deal.....

Remember when you were in elementary school, middle school, and high school when every kid bases how cool they are on how many friends they have? Everyone wants to be popular and to be known and feel like they belong. Everyone then sees people following around these people in sports, movies, and singing and they want that attention. Everywhere they go someone recognizes their face. They dont realize that when they are famous that they cant go anywhere without people bothering them. They just see the glamorous part of them getting everything for free from companies that want people with fame to market their product.
Not to mention if you are famous the odds are you have a heck of a lot of money and who doesnt like money?

I have worked with a number of famous people and wouldn't want to swap my life for theirs. I don't think that people realise that along with the good things that come with fame, there are also the bad things. I have seen stories in the papers which aren't true, but they can do nothing about it as letting it go is easier and better than denying it (or even more will be made of it in the press). I have seen paparazzi stalk them, seen them at the end of a show and wanting to go out for a simple drink with their colleagues and can't because there are hundreds of people wanting a piece of them. I worked with one who's picture appeared in the paper showing them doing something ordinary. They then started worrying that people knew where they lived. Another has had people discovering their address and is now worried that their family is at risk. People must realise that fame is not all about being adored and spending time on the red carpet. Those who's faces stick around for years have usually had fame as a by-product of their talent.

I think part of the reason is simply the fact that human beings like to feel special, recognized, even idolized. Think about it. In our culture, we determine our self-worth by how much money we have, or where we are on the 'social ladder'. As one of the 'younger generations' I see your point, but you need to give us a little more credit, too. We do have some sense, and can make the right choices. Just give us time.

I've been watching your answers to other people's questions for a while, now, and you impress me. I share your frustration. Many people treat this forum like an ersatz chatroom. If it isn't points of idle curiosity, it's people wanting to find shortcuts to something. I'd like to believe that they think that if they were famous, they could do so much more good in the world (I used to think that, when I was MUCH younger). But the fact is, I think people see celebrities on TV, think it looks like a cool way to live and so want it for themselves. Or think they do. I'm afraid most of us are just that shallow, and mis (or un) informed.
