Numerically, the US Navy, by far. But the Brits are better sailors, and use their equipment much more effectively than the US Navy does.

Up until about a century and a half ago, the British Navy was the epitome of strength. Not only did it defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588, it was a fundamental part of the process of conquering the "unknown" world that would become part of the British Empire. Now, the power has decreased, mostly in part to the fact of how British forces suffered in WWI; vaguely in part to the fact that most places where the British government had a naval foothold on rebelled against Britain, and, for obvious reasons, expelled all British naval traces. America now has gained a foothold in many countries all over the world, because the power of England was removed. Though not particularly strong when the country was born, after a few decades it became a powerful, if not the greatest, navy. The United States Navy is now represented in many countries, especially in the Phillipines.
In terms of strength and strategy, they are both equal, but in different degrees. Both are highly respected, and have the same technology. Hope that helped. Love you lots!

The Royal Navy only has 28 offensive ships and a handfull of logistical ships and replenishment ships. The Royal Navy is no longer a true blue water navy. Argentina if they wanted to right now, could take back the falklands with no issues.
The US Navy has 280+ offensive ships and hundreds of logistical and replenishment ships. The US Navy is a bona fide blue water navy and a text book navy how others should be judged. However, that's the problem, no other navy even comes close.
I rank the Worlds biggest and best navies in order as of 2015: US Navy, Chinese Navy, Russian Navy, Japanese Navy, Indian Navy, Korean Navy, French Navy, Royal Navy, and Brazilian Navy. Like I said before, the Royal Navy only has 28 offensive ships and subs. That's a bona fide defense force against a foe like Russia, lol.

The US Navy is the most powerful Navy that the world has ever seen. That is not to say that the British Navy is weak, by no means. The British Navy has an excellent tradition. In terms of numbers and potential, hands down the US Navy is stronger. Strategically it can vary based on the situation. Both countries successes have often been reached due to the allegiance and cooperation that takes place between Britain and the US (ie during WWI and WWII).

In terms of numbers and technology, the United States Navy pwns the British Royal Navy. But as far as qualities and strategies goes, it probably depends, though I've heard the RN is "better" in these catagories.
As for tradition, the RN has a LOT of history and tradition, compared to the USN.
But it does not matter, both Navies are powerful and fight together.
