Please dont tell me Astrology is a way of grouping people (based on their birthdate) that defines each person thus if you know what astrological sign I am ... you know my life?
I say this cause honestly I think astrological people are a little (woo hoo). No offense on that, I had a conversation with one the other day and she seemed very confused. She was asking me for help on answers to lifes questions. She thought Astrology had the answers and her mind is all up in the stars now ... literally. Hard to have a conversation with them cause they like to relate things to planets or organs or Gods and feel as if they know you cause of a simple trait ... ah yes you are a Scorpio? That means you like money, you dont like to be controlled, and you dont like people you cant trust. Its like are you serious! This is a common trait among ALL people. And youre gonna sit there and tell me you know me cause Im a Scorpio!? /=/
So please explain to me whats up with this Astrology business. If I have to put in my two cents ... Astrology was an ancient form of Psychology.
I also want to point out that Astrology has its earliest recordings at 3rd millenium BC. Yet it wasnt until modern times when all the planets were discovered. So that book you are reading that mentions "Pluto" ... is NOT ancient knowledge. OR somebody needs to re-write history as who discovered the planet Pluto!
I strongly feel Astrology may be a gimmick, or a deception.
I am open-minded ...
Thanks for your answers.

You shouldn't base an entire topic of study on one idiot who mouthed off about it. If I didn't know any better, every religion in the world would be a load of crock aimed at making people unhappy for no apparent reason at all. Obviously, what people tell you and how confused they are is not representative of the actual topic and the actual knowledge it contains.
Astrology is not a gimmick, or a deception, but there are some people who make it that way. As in any field, there are people who will use it to make money and falsely make people feel good about themselves. Once again, just because people exploit the topic does not mean there is nothing behind it. There are many psychologists, for instance, who know barely anything about psychology and send their patients off with their heads full of nonsense.
Now, horoscopes are a good example of the 'gimmick' side of astrology. Horoscopes lead you to believe your life and personality is owed to one of twelve signs. If you do some research about astrology, you will find that there is far more to astrology than this. There are indeed 12 signs, but there are also many planets that represent different parts of your personality and life that fall into different signs depending on your date, time, and place of birth. Where they fall in your chart and what aspects they make to eachother also influences how strong or weak the influence of certain planets are.
The sun sign can be an indicator of one of the larger forces at work in a person, but it certainly will not be entirely accurate due to the many forces at work in a birth chart. Often, people of the same sun sign do exhibit similar qualities, but because each person is made up of so much more astrologically speaking, this is not where their personality ends. Each birth chart is unique, and interpreting one requires an in-depth knowledge of astrology as it can be very complicated. Also, astrology does not dictate your life or your personality, it highlights forces at work in it. It does not ignore the importance of experience in shaping your personality and life path. It requires some intuitive understanding of the forces at work, and if you are too suspicious of intuition, then astrology is not for you. But just because it is not for you does not mean it is not real.
Knowledge is the key here. Get your birth chart seen to by a real astrologist, or have a look at it yourself even and try to figure it out. If you really learnt something about astrology, you would see that people who really dedicate time to astrology are not crazy or stupid. Quite the opposite, in fact. You could learn a lot from these people - but that's entirely up to you.
Astrology has been around since people would look up at the stars ( a really long time). It really works by discovering and reconfirming. For example, you've said that "this is a common trait among ALL people", so I'm going to assume that you have already asked people what they do or don't like and checked with what their sign is? You're friend really didn't tell you enough, you should of been told something from a real Astrologist.
Horoscopes are the real gimmick, it literally is a joke about Astrology. Sure when certain things align in the sky, certain things are likely to happen but the Horoscopes are too specific and should honestly just generalize what is expected to happen that month.
P.S. Scorpios like to think about and question death, life, and religion :)
I'm not going to try to answer all of your question, because I am not an expert in astrology. However, I can tell you that I feel you when you talk about the traits of the signs. Everyone is different, so they are going to be different than someone else of the same sign. It all depends on how the planets are aligned in one's chart (and I can't answer that part of your question about Pluto, because I'm not quite sure). The girl you were talking to seems like she's learning herself. The only people who know all the ins and outs of astrology are astrologers, and there's only a small percentage on here compared to the rest of us still learning.
But I believe as well that astrology was a form of psychology. It falls in the same grouping as the Christian idea that depending what fluids ruled your body, you could have a varying personality (Choleric, Melancholy, Phlematic..etc.), or the puritan ideal that being born on a Sunday made you holier and happier than if you were born on a Wednesday ("Wednesday's child is full of woe"..."But Sunday's child is bonny and blithe"). It's something created by us to catagorize ourselves.
P.S. Thank you for writing your doubts in an intelligent way, rather than hurling insults. You get much friendlier answers that way. :)
While some astrologers are hacks, keeping it vague so convince people it's right, it's unfair to judge astrology on its dishonest practitioners. There is a complex system of understanding behind the practice of astrology for those who honestly and seriously study it. However, that is not to say there is a scientific explanation for it. Astrology is a metaphysical pursuit and its logic exists in the realm of metaphysics, not physics. And if you count metaphysics in "psychic/wiccan/occult studies" then you're not really being fair. It would be like asking someone to explain biology in non-scientific terms or nihilism in non-philosophical terms. It is what it is. Just for the record, I'm not personally an astrolger nor do I believe in it, but I do have respect for those who do. Serious astrologers are very educated individuals. Also, newspaper horoscopes are not really astrology. They're a watered down side show for the masses.
The Bible is from more than 5,000 years ago;is that still fake or not accurate? Have the stars changed since astrology was an ancient form of psychology? The "Horoscopes" you read in magazines are crap. There is no truth to them. The only thing that you know might be the sun sign only, like "I'm a Leo" or "I'm a Sagittarius". Astrology is way more complex. I assume that you don't know about the moon sign,Jupiter sign,rising/ascendant sign, the planets in the houses etc. Astrology is used in order for us to have a deeper look into out personality and into our inner self. Every planet, house, aspects and even degrees matter, and they all make up our personality. I don't think that astrology should determine everything in life, and it definitely should not rule your friend's life.
