I would like to buy a tri-climate jacket for freezing temperatures with lots of snow, but wondering how useful and lightweight they are. I need it for a long trip.

If you have an Eddie Bauer store where you live, try going there and talking to the sales people about what you want and they'll give you great suggestions. Eddie Bauer is somewhat pricey, but they're QUALITY!
Anything you buy there will be guaranteed for a pretty long time, and likely last you YEARS vs. anything else you buy that won't last as long and won't hold up to anything extreme.

Though, any sporting store should have similar options, just not so sure what other brands are good, so I say Bauer from experience =o)
