Plasma TVs.. I know you aren't supposed to tilt them, but can someone tell me why?

In one of my jobs, I oversee many TVs leaving a store merchandise pick up department.  Many times, people buy plasma TVs and then want to somehow magically fit it into the back of their tiny car.  When they ask why the TV can't tip, the guys are at a lack for an answer, other than "you just can't".

Still, I'm curious, and "you just can't" isn't good enough for me.  So.. why aren't you supposed to tilt them?  What will happen?

You can tilt them. They are tested for hundreds of hours to make sure that a "tilt" does not ruin the set.  The manufacturer knows that the tv's will have to go thru many trucks and warehouses on their way to a consumer's house.
But we also know that sensitive electronics should not be bumped, tilted, have drinks spilled on them, left in an unheated garage in winter. The people in the manufacturing plants go to extraordinary lengths to keep the environment clean and free of extreme motions (tilts). We should do the same thing.

Cause you got glass which is week in the center. If you hold a large pcs of glass and press lightly on the center it will chatter. This is only during transportation though. It could break if the car/truck hits a large bump causing large movement of this glass. At far from tilting it after for installations and  or repair should be ok as long as your careful.
