CRT HDTV, Plasma TV or LCD TV?
I know there is a hot market for these new TVs but I am the kind of person who does not replace something with a newer model unless he is convinced it is better. I have a Sony CRT HDTV which is 6 years old. When I compare the HDTV picture quality on my old TV with all the new TVs in Best Buy I still feel my old TV has a more realistic HDTV picture quality than the new ones. Can anyone recommend an LCD or Plasma TV that proves me wrong? Be realistic!
I think Jf is talking more to the point I am making. To give you an example if they put one of these old sony CRT HDTV TV next to the all the other new models(LCD,Plasma, etc) in Best Buy and cover all the parts of TVs but the screen so that you can't see which one it is then I am sure 99% of people would point to the old HDTV TV as having the best and most realistic picture quality.

Compare it against a Panasonic Viera G or V series preferably (and S series might be okay as well). Or compare it against a Pioneer Kuro Elite. Those brands' Plasmas are probably about the only thing worth comparing against a HD CRT. But even then they might not be so vastly different that it would warrant you liking/disliking them more. Or wanting to buy a Plasma.
CRT is an AMAZING technology in terms of image quality. It hands down crushes anything LCD (CCFL, LED, doesn't matter). Its the physical size of the TVs that drove people off (they sacrificed quality for thin panels). Which is too bad, because people chose the inferior product to save some square footage in their homes.
If I was you, I'd milk that CRT as long as you can. Its a good TV, no reason to just discard it now. Maybe in another 4-5 years though. As OLED and Laser TVs develop and as 3D comes to the market, there might slowly become a better reason for you to give up the CRT. But we're at least 5 years away from that. I think you're safe to hold onto your money for the time being.

If you have a CRT HD tv then it was the Sony 34", yes the CRT tv still have a better picture specially in black colors. Most consumers now want a slimmer and bigger tv than the old CRT tv that are too big and heavy. Go on line to Home Theater Magazine and read the review on September issue which compared the Panasonic Plasma 42" G10 model to a Sony, LG, Toshiba and Vizio LCD tv. The top choice is the Plasma and the only model to be a THX certified. Retail store are not always similar to your own living room, and thus the comparison is not fair. The Best HD flat panel tv is the Pioneer Elite KURO. Panasonic will be the only major company to produce Plasma are the end of the year. Hope this will help you out.

if you have 8 feet and want to use the most of it, go with a projector. They are about 500 to 2000 dollars and can be awsome if you can get the room dark enough. But if you are looking for a tv that can be used in light and dark situations, LCD is the way to go. If you treat them right the are rated to go 4 hours for 30 years. So since we all know we will watch more than just 4 hours of tv a day it lifespan will be less, but do you really need the same tv in 15 years? I would stay away from plasma, They get to hot and run a mich higher risk or "burn-in". Burn in is when a certain picture is on to long the image burns itself in and will be able to be seen all the time. A good place to see this is an arcade. Go look at some of their older games and you will be able to see "insert coin\credit" and other objects that are on the screen too long. CRT also have this problem but it is lessened only by a little. The only problem with LCD you will need to look for is viewing angle. Make sure you do not need to be right in front to see it, but you can stand to the side and still see it.

The choice of technology depends on the model you choose also. And it does vary based on the model even if you choose plasma or LCD as both the technologies have their own pros and cons.

LCD come with thinner set, less problem, not burn-in,less power consumption, not glare in bright room and last longer.
Plasma come with better picture quality for dark room, smoother motion but sometime have burn-in problem.
Personally I would go with LCD tv.
