Is it legal to mail a bottle of wine?

Thru the usps or any other shipper? If it is illegal, could you get away with it? Do they scan packages for contents? Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to send a bottle of wine to a friend for the holidays.
I have already purchased the bottle, so having it sent from a vendor is not an option. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Yes, it is illegal to mail alcohol.

Yes, you can get away with it, just don't tell them what you are shipping. If they ask, which they won't, say it's fluid samples.

Use UPS or FedEx, not the USPS. Mailing alcohol can be a crime.

Send A Bottle Of Wine

Can't send wine in the U.S. to another person in the U.S.(because that person in the U.S. could be a minor) but you can send it to someone in another country if that specific country allows importation of it. Depends on who is at the x-ray machine, wine has gotten through before because I've seen it from the other end, but they do xray for it(airmail). Chances are they would catch it.

I worked for the USPS for 6 years, then left there to work in Google's mail room. I worked the xray machine for Google, and saw bottles of wine come through once, so that's what I mean by "Ive seen it from the other end".

As long as you and the recipient are of legal age then shipping alcohol is legal. I/we buy from mail order all the time. Sometimes it is the carrier (UPS, FedEx) require ID-proof of age or the shipper/retailer will require proof such as e-mailing them a PDF copy of your ID.

In fact I was at USPS on Monday and noticed an ad about shipping-packaging. It had a box marked with "Vodka" on the outside with an x over it stating this is the wrong way to package. It then showed the same box with the word vodka blacked out. This is the proper way it stated. So then they are concerned about theft and want us to be smart and not advertise the contents as alcohol. It is legal if you are.
