Have you ever shot an azimuth?

I was listening to two hunters talk. One of them was telling his friend, "Yeah. I got lost up there on that mountain top. But then I sat down and was able to shoot an azimuth off of one ridge...then another off of another ridge. Then I realized where camp was." I was just curious. It must have been hard carrying two azimuths out of the woods when a guy is lost. I've never even see one before.

The hunter described a triangulation technique. There are a couple of different kinds, but basically work the same.

To locate an object that you see, on a map, you would shoot an azimuth from you to the object, and then a second from another object that you can see, and know where it is on the map, to the same object as your first. Using your protractor, trace a line on your azimuth past the target, and trace the azimuth from the known object. Where they intersect on the map, is it's location.

To find yourself on the map you start by locating 2 objects and finding them on your map. You then shoot an azimuth to both locations. Subtract 180 degrees from both numbers; this is a back azimuth. Trace the back azimuths on the map the same as above. You are at the intersection of the lines.

Funny. You need to look in to "orienteering" using a compass. The guy was basically getting a compass bearing and lining up with an object that he could see from the ridge, such as a tall tree or mountain, then he walked to that object, then did it again. It's the way you can keep from getting off track without having to look at your compass constantly as you walk.

I hope your not serious, an azimuth is a term for a bearing taken on a compass.

Accurate Azimuth is to find true north, using a triangular set of points, using GPS, those Hunters are smart! Can I shot one? Sure I have a 7mm Remington Magnum!

I was driving down the street in Henderson, NV after being in the casino for a couple of hours. I suddenly heard a huge bang and felt liquid on my leg. I was sure I was shot but didn't see anyone in the other cars panicking and my windows weren't shatter. A soda can burst in my car from the heat. Stay out of those bad neighborhoods or other people's spouse's bed.
