Why is my computer slow after reinstalling XP?

I just reinstalled Windows XP and the computer is still running very slow. I have Pentium 4 processor 2.4ghz and 736mb RAM. Its service pack 3. It runs slow with or without the internet. Could the hard drive be bad?

Was is slow before you re-installed XP? If so then download ccleaner and run it often along with a good anti-virus. I also suggest putting another 2GB of RAM in there, only costing £20 and your computer will be quicker than when you first bought.

Have you ever defragged your computer?

Hard drive fragmentation will severely affect the speed and reliability of your computer. Fragmentation is often the cause of system slows, malfunctions such as system hangs, program errors or a complete crash.

So defrag your hard drive, better yet, install an automatic defrag like Diskeeper, you can download free trialware at www.diskeeper.com.

If the install was a clean install, did you install all the hardware drivers?

Without the hardware drivers, the motherboard and other components will not function properly.
