There are 12 months in a year, so let's number them first.
January 1
February 2
March 3
April 4
May 5
June 6
July 7
August 8
September 9
October 10
November 11
December 12

Ok so now we know the order. Melissa was born at the start of march, 1987. Kaitlyn was born near the end of may of 1986. We can start with Kaitlyn's birthday and count forward.

May-June-July-August-September-October-November-December-January-February-March.

Now we can see that Melissa is around 10 months younger than Kaitlyn. But, if we average 30 days a month and subtract the 22 days after the start of may Kaitlyn was born we will know how many days were left in may between the two birthdays. Now we can add the four days in march Melissa was born after the first to get 12 days between the two. But, now we have to subtract a month to account for those lost days in may.

Kaitlyn is 9 months and 12 days older than Melissa. I hope that helps!

There are 31 days in May, and 31 days in March
31 - 22 = 9days
9days + 4days = 13days

There are 9 MONTHS apart from May1986 and March 1987

THEREFORE Kaitlyn is 9 months and 13days older than Melissa

http://www.timeanddate.com/date/durationresult.html?m1=5&d1=22&y1=1986&m2=3&d2=4&y2=1987

Duration calculation results
From and including: Thursday, May 22, 1986
To, but not including : Wednesday, March 4, 1987

It is 287 days from the start date to the end date, including the end date

Or 9 months, 11 days including the end date, or 41 weeks (using only 30 day months, however)

The way I figure differences is to first see how many days are left in one month to the first of the next (May 22 to May 31=9* days); June 1 to Jan. 31=7 mon. 31 days OR 8 mon ; Feb. 1 to March 4=32 days, which equals yet another month + 1* day. So you have 9 months and 10* days )
