My cousin and I are travelling across the states?

We are starting in New orleans going to the Jazz fest, and then travelling west to LA then back East cross country, we have 2 and a half months to travell and stop in different places.

we are both girls 21 and 22 from Scotland is there anywhere that we shouldn't miss out? and any places we should avoid? we will be staying in hostels the whole time so any recommendations on good cheap ones would be much appreciated.

Wow, I wish had the time to take the trip with you. First of all, unlike many places in Europe, the hostel network is not great in the US outside of major cities. However, many motel chains are really cheap, like Motel 6 and Super 8. Also, if you invest in some camping equipment, you'll save tons of money and finding camp sites it easy. From New Orleans I'd travel to San Antonio, Texas, then up to El Paso. From there you HAVE to go to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Over to Tuscon Arizona (Kartchener Caves), up to Phoenix, the Grand Canyon, then into Utah for the more amazing National Parks, then meander over to San Diego, up to LA, then up the coast on route 1 to San Francisco, into Yosemite National Park, Death Valley, Las Vegas. Then be prepared to be BORED getting back to the East Coast. New York, Philadelphia, the New Jersey shore, New England. It boggles the mind. as a louisiana resident i can tell you that you're gonna have way more fun if you move the trip earlier (like next month!) and go to mardi gras instead. don't get me wrong, jazz fest is really fun, but if you wanna see the true hardcore uncensored version on new orleans you gotta go to mardi gras. this year its on feb 24. yes. loads of fun (and drinkin) guaranteed! oh yeah. and when you guys head out to LA make sure to go and eat at an IN-N-OUT restaurant. the best freakin burgers your gonna eat in your life!! you will instantly fall in love!! every time i go down there, its the first place i stop at. theyre allover LA county. the best beach in southern california is huntington beach down in orange county. awesome vibe, always full of people, and great water. ur gonna love it

oh yeah. and try couchsurfing.com. they have people from all over the world who let travellers and backpackers stay in their homes for a couple of days. you guys being from scotland would make it more easier, cause we americans always like being around european people...you guys just seem to be more smarter than us! lolz!!

I'm from Tekamah, Nebraska, there are some very pretty sight seeings in Nebraska. the corn palace and the sand plains, but there's snow on the ground, so u might want to go snowboarding. the great arc in Missouri is a can't miss.. it's AMAZING. you get to go up the arch and look out to the whole city. it is really cool
