Vector problem that i can't seem to crack?

Hi, i can't seem to solve this problem no matter what i do!

The vector (imagine this is in component form),

(a - b, b) is parallel to the x axis and the vector ( a + b, 2a - b) is parallel to (2, 1). Find the values of "a" and "b".

Thanks in advance :)

If (a - b, b) is parallel to the x axis then b must be zero so it is (a, 0).

This leaves the other vector as (a, 2a) so it can't be parallel to (2, 1).

There seems to be something wrong with the question. It would be OK if the first one was parallel to the y axis.
