If you are seeking a fast growing evergreen I would plant a Green Giant Arborvitae Thuja plicata 'Green Giant' http://www.naturehills.com/product/green_giant_arborvitae.aspx.
Once established, after the first year planted, the tree will grow 3 feet a year. The Norway Spruce Picea abies http://www.naturehills.com/product/norway_spruce.aspx
or Austrian Pine Pinus nigra http://www.naturehills.com/product/austrian_pine.aspx
will not even grow 2 feet a year.
The Green Giant does well in a variety of soils including clay. Plus it is cold hardy for your Northern Minnesota area.
Some other plants that will work in your heavy clay conditions:

Tomatoes, maximum herbs (cilantro, basil, oregano, rosemary), bell peppers and maximum varieties of warm peppers would nicely be grown in pots- the two initiate from seeds or purchase small vegetation. i've got grown all those in pots myself plus I rather have began carrots and radishes from seed in deeper pots. it is likewise possible to sow slightly loose leaf lettuce or mescalun combination in sturdy sized pots for salad. you do not prefer a fancy pot. i've got considered somebody develop tomatoes by potential of making a hollow interior the best of a bag of potting soil and sticking a tomato plant into the bag. Pots can dry placed directly so which you will would desire to water in many situations -probable on a daily basis while it extremely is warm. greater pots stay moist longer. solar for under area of the day is okay for many vegetables- you basically get extremely much less yield. in case you under no circumstances have solar on the patio, then you definately would desire to would desire to offer then some solar someplace else or use a develop lamp. we've grown all a lot of those on a sunny windowsill too, exceptionally the herbs. sturdy luck.
