Which computer brand is best/most dependable? HP? Gateway? Dell?

I am shopping for a new computer at a local retailer (Best Buy, Staples, Walmart, Sams club, etc). and would like to spend less than $750. Is there a brand that is most dependable, cost efficient, easily repaired or upgraded? I want a large hard drive for music and photos/editing and work software & documents. Something fast that I can run two or three programs or browsers at once with ease. I also would like to be able to make backup copies of DVDs/CDs. Any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks!

I would say don't use one of the major retailers (except for fry's, they always have some great deals). If you want dependable for cheap, go check out newegg website and see some of their prebuilt rigs. Their prices are always competitive and shipping is quick!

I'm afraid you won't like this answer.

Having owned/used Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and HP computers for years (I bought my first computer back in 83), I have to say that IMHO the best/most dependable computer is Apple. I bought my first Mac 18 months ago, and I'm just sorry I didn't do it sooner.

They are a bit more expensive (although the Mac mini is pretty cheap), but they are worth it. I run a Windows VM when I need to run a Windows program - but Apple now supports dual booting into Windows.

manufacturers skill no longer something. that's no longer the style that makes a working laptop or computing gadget extra suitable. that's the specs. discover ways to envision them after which you're able to make a much better determination. maximum needed is the processor velocity and no remember if it is sixty 4 bit and double. you decide on a three hundred MGH chip and a million or 2 gigs of reminiscence. some people think of AMD is larger than Intel, yet they the two are very stable. As for manufacturers, i'd decide on Dell, yet this is purely for people who understand specs. in any different case, i'd decide on HP, simply by fact there specs are in lots of circumstances stable. make constructive the computing gadget is Vista nicely suited, or i does no longer purchase it.

Buy a Dell simply because their warranties are better. If you buy a Dell, get it online. You will pay less because they have instant rebates all the time. If you buy a Dell at Best Buy, Staples, etc. and your computer breaks, it is up to that store to fix it, not Dell and it becomes a huge hassle.

After 8 years in the industry I must say that Lenovo (IBM) is one of the easiest to work on. Everyone will have their own opinion on computers. I would say look for the best deal. Toshiba or Lenovo. If you had the money I would tell you to go for a mac. If you cant afford a toshiba or lenovo go with the hp (laptop) I've always had good luck with them.
