Why won't my carrots grow?

We have had a garden for a few years now and most everything grows wonderfully. However, my carrots will not grow. I have tried different varieties and planting in different spots but they only get about a inch long and that is it. Any suggestions?

Since I am not sure what zone you are in, I'm going to refer you to a site which has some very practical and easy to understand information. No garden mumbo jumbo here. It's a good site for bookmarking.

Try this. I dig my carrot bed out one foot deep, and it is mostly peat moss and mulch, with maybe 1/4 original soil. They like a deep, soft, well watered place to grow long and tender.

i have been putting a garden for over 50 years and this is the first year that my carrots did not come up and I have heard from many others with the same problems

You soil is too heavy. They need sandy, loose soil.

You might try growing them in a raised bed, or a container. i've even seen them grown in pieces of drainpipe set on end.
