Definition of Terrorist? of Torture?

When we define our captured prisoners as humans, people think of their general conception of the human race. It also has a positive annotation, and people don't usually think of murderers and rapists in the same perspective. Consciences come into play here because these "humans" seem to be far away from the war we're fighting.

Yet, when we define these prisoners as terrorists, it's easier . But, this has a completely negative annotation, seeing these people as monsters who slaughter women, children, and each other with no reason. Many are. Many are leaders captured and checked multiple times for identification. The leaders who draw in starving men from the poppy field with dreams of riches and eternity. But, without a trial of any sort, we cannot disconnect those who have information and those who are the pawns and peons of the organizations.

All Americans want to kill these terrorists in the battlefield when they're being fired upon, but when we have a defenseless man incarcerated in Guantanamo Bay, it doesn't seem fair or right to just kill or hurt him outright. It's easy when our boys are across the ocean fighting a war, but when people have to make hard decisions here at home (many who don't even like the effort), it's awkward and uncomfortable.

People need to realize that we're fighting a war, and that we have to use some techniques at times to save lives. But, those at the other side need to understand the viewpoint of democrats who see movies and the media, people who just want everyone to be happy and safe. While misdirected, it's a compassionate stand against injustices against those who can't defend themselves.

thanks if you read all this instead of just closing the window

Thinking back (way back) to high school, the definition of terrorism was "the use--or threat--of indiscriminate violence in the attempt to compel political concessions".

Torture is defined as the infliction of severe pain (physical or psychological) to coerce or punish.

The deal with captives is this--we have every right to kill them on the battlefield if they are actually there shooting at us. Once they are captured, we may no longer do so without due process.

A people will be known by the way they treat the powerless.

You seem to be missing the point. The US military PAID Pakistanis $5,000 per person they captured and turned over to US custody. They tortured them, then gave them to us for us to torture them. They were NOT caught on the battlefield, but caught in mosques, homes, schools, walking down the road. NO ONE objects to rooting out terrorism or shooting the enemy in battle. We object to scooping up random people off the side of the road, claiming they are 'terrorists' for 7 years, incarcerating them for 7 years without acccusing them of ANY crime, without charging them with ANY crime, and without trying them and finding them guilty of ANY crime.....and torturing them. It is against the law, it is against our international treaties that we signed and promised to uphold, and it is against our moral stance in this world.
