K they are prices from cheap, very cheap to wow prices. So what's a good site, good maker, what type of things do I look for in a safe helmet? I've been searching ebay, other than that what other sites are good for purchasing a helmet, this is a gift and do what a safe but not one that's gonna break the bank. Thanks to all for help and any other info that would be needed.

Wow thanks for all the great info I'm gonna let you all pic best cause all have been very heplful. It'll be street riding lots of long rides and trips, never though of the intercom and helmets that's a great thing to look into. Well I guess not only got to pick one out for myself but he'll have to come along and try it on.

A proper fitting helmet is the difference between a fun ride and a massive headache at the end of the day. It is really tough to buy a helmet for someone as a gift if they aren't around to try it on.
Dutch, what type of riding are we talking about, Street?, Dirt? Track?, all of these make a difference. If you are going only Street, look at HJC, good helmets at a fair price, I have owned three, two for me, and one for the wife. My first HJC was a full face job, nice and snug, Not Tight!, tight is gonna turn into vice-like after the first 20 miles. Now have open face or 3/4 helmets, so me and wife can yak with intercom, also we can use the CB on the bike. Most people have hit the nail on the head, go to a dealer/motorcycle parts store, the money you think you saved by buying from the web might actually disappear if the helmet turns out to not fit. At the dealer, talk to the "senior" sales people, not just the first kid that walks up to you. The more input, the better the fit, the better the ride, and have the receiver(gift right?) go with you, it has to fit them. HJC, Bell, Shoei, Arai, Scorpion, KBC are all good. About the money part, it's protection for the head, without the head you are dead! The better the protection, the better the chance of survival, but in my humble opinion, Helmets only mean the difference between open and closed at the service! But I still wear one 95% of the time.
No, use an actual riding helmet. They are ment for this purpose--motorcycle helmets are too bulky---stick with a riding helmet---your kids will most likely try to ditch a helmet if it is too uncomfortable to wear... I reccomend a helmet with a GPS Retention System--they offer a more customized fit which is much safer than any old style helmet without one.. Also remember that after every fall or every 2 yrs without a fall the helmet should be replaced as its safety level will decrease over time and after every trauma. Have Fun! BB

They have great prices, always have good sales going on and sometimes free shipping. Even if it's not free, it is reasonable. I have never had an issue with them.
All helmets must be DOT (Department of Transportation) approved to wear them while on the road. Snell just means that it has an additional shell of protection and while that is good, it is not necessary. The helmet should fit very tight...almost like it is your head. It should not move at all if you put it on and shake your head around. It can be uncomfortable in the beginning, but the inside pads will conform to your face. If you are unsure of your size in helmet, go into a store and try them on. I do not recommend buying from an online store unless you know what size you wear for each brand...yes they do fit differently depending on brand. Good luck.
You get what you pay for with helmets. It would be hard to buy one over the net as different brand fit differently even though they are the same size. People use to say you either had an Arai or an AGV shaped head. Today its much harder as there are so many brands. As long as it meets the relevant standards for you country you should be right. Just make sure it is comfortable, the most boring looking helmet can sometimes be the most comfortable. I generally go for something in the middle of the price range.
