Why are 3-D Glasses and Videos Red and Blue?

they r very oposing color. in black and white portraits sometimes things pop out so my theory is opposing colors will cause things to become 3D on a2D surface...
also the 3 main colors in a TV r yellow green and blue so that might have something to do with it?
