How do I soften fabric with NO fabric softener?

I bought some cloth napkins and the material is stiff, so it gets super-wrinkled in the wash. I know they will soften in time, but is there something I can use in the wash to speed up the process? I don't want to use fabric softener because it'll make the napkins less absorbent.

What's the fiber of the fabric in question? If it's polyester, the answer is pretty much "nothing will do any good". For cellulosics like cotton and linen, add vinegar. Or, if the point is to avoid ironing, plaster the clean, wet napkins to something flat to dry... side of the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, etc. Peel off when they're dry and fold.
