First, you should decide the purpose of the room. If you are going to have a desk, a futon, and book shelves, it sounds like it may be an office/guest room.

Or possibly, it may be a small family den/sitting room. When you have designated the room's purpose, then you can go about decorating. Since the futon is a big piece, keep in mind its color when you choose a paint color - unless, of course, you are going to change out the upholsery or fabric on the futon. I like the idea of hanging fabric, too. Could you recover the futon in the same fabric if you do this? You could do only one wall; not necessarily the whole room. You could also use fabric in an old room divider screen. You could sew up some throw pillows in the same fabric and have a decoator look.

Now, think of what kind of look you want. If you want a cottage-y, shabby chic look, go for the yellow or pale green.

If you want a more sophistated, urban look, go for the neutal tan or beige. In my opinion, this is the most versatile color. You can put so many different things with it, and it'll work.

You could also have a striking room with certain shades of green. I would stay away from dark greens. It may make your room too dark. the focus would be on the dark wall color, not on the accessories and furnishings.
