Cheap places to stay in Edinburgh?

Are there any very cheap places to stay in Edinburgh? My friend who is driving us up from London will need somewhere to get some real sleep, but apart from that we're not too fussy. We are youths so are open to youth hostels. I've seen hostels for £20+ which I eventually got used to the idea of, only to find out that they've not rooms free. I know that this is a bad time to try to book accommodation at the last minute... but does the university rent out their halls? any German tentstation things going on?

Money is tight but we are not very discerning. Thanks in advance.

The simple answer is that all the cheap places to stay were booked last Christmas. Your options are:

Phone the tourist board on 0845 22 55 121, and see if they can find you anything. I think that there is a booking fee, and you are probably going have to pay £50 or more per night.

Stay out of town and just come in for the day. For instance Stirling or Glasgow is less than an hour away by train. Both cities have hostels, and the SYHA online booking system was showing beds available next week.

Find a quiet street and sleep in the car.

Book now for 2010.

You might like to consider staying in North Berwick. It's a lovely little seaside town and there are regular trains into Edinburgh, takes about half an hour. There are some very nice B&Bs and your money will go a lot further than in Edinburgh itself.
