What was it about Ohio State Football in the Woody Hayes era?
Don't talk about Mr. Hayes but rather what was special about his brand of football.

Woody Hayes died in his sleep on March 12, 1987. In 1986, Mr Hayes said he had his 2 greatest honors. To Dot the I in the Ohio band before a game (a huge honor in OSU football), and he was asked by the students and the college to give the commencement speech for the class of 1986. Mr. Hayes was so moved, he broke down and said it was the greatest honor he'd ever been given. What's sad is that Bear Bryant; who was a very shady person behind the scenes; a pretty much borderline alcoholic, womanizer and many other sketchy things; is revered as an icon, when Woody Hayes is vilified due to his stupid punch in anger. When Woody died, there was a little footnote in the sports illustrated on the back page and when Bryant died, SI did a huge story with Bryant in the front page. Hayes was a fantastic coach, and a great man.

He brought the idea that football should be sonmething that you should be immersed in from season to season. It became a way of life to some. Rivalries took on more importance. Passion dictated thought.
Basically he changed the public perception of how the game should be played and enjoyed.
Plus he won. A lot.

The same thing as other great coaches like Bryant, Osborne, and Parsegian. The commitment to win, an abundance of football knowledge, charisma, and the ability to seek and nurture talent. Another attribute of great coaches is the ability to evolve with the game.
