Why do immigrants come to America?

Why do you come here but still live your life like your back there? From what I have observed, your lifestyle, beliefs, attitude, and even your loyalty, remains dedicated to the country you left. So why did you leave and come to America? This is a serious question with no disrespect intended. I just don't get it and hope you can enlighten me.

I understand the "better life" peril. But, if I "had to" go to another country, I would do my absolute best to assimilate. Learn the language, ect. Thanks for the truthful answers.

Well at this point and time if we look at Calif we can see the true effects of what illegal immigration has..We have over 30 million Americans who cannot find work and they need a better life too. They have kids to feed, they have bills to pay, they have to put a roof over their heads. We have over 20 million illegals here and how many more better lives is America suppose to offer ?

That is an excellent question. Years ago, when my ancestors immigrated here from Italy in the 1900's, they wanted to be American, they wanted to speak English and assimilate into the culture. Things are different now so it will be interesting to see if any immigrants give an honest answer to this one!

for the same reason your's did! All families come here cause this is suppose to be the nation of opportunity. Do not forget what is written on the statue of liberty! Give Us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses

150 years ago my family came from Ireland when that country was having terribly hard times. During that period the Irish where subjected to lots of racism, and a paranoia spread about the Irish stealing all the jobs from hard working americans with signs like "irish need not apply" (sound familiar?)

As for giving up customs I don't know where your family is from, but judging by your pic I would say Europe. America really has hardly any original tradition since we are a country built by immigrants. It is probably safe to assume you participate in at least a few of your european ancestors custom. I know I do. we should not hold the immigrants of today to a different standard nor should we repeat the racism brought upon past immigrants.

Today you would not believe how bad citizens of some countries have it (mexico for example) living on a couple dollars a day and dodging bullets all the time, how anyone blame them when all of our ancestor made the same decision at one point.

Its the same as if you left to a different country...its the fear of change...it's not easy to break free from the way you were rasied, some immigrants do and others dont, it's more of a personal choice, i don't believe in loosing your roots and forgetting where you came from, i believe in being grateful for what the country you left to has provided you and given you, and show has much repsect to them as you can without forgetting that it was not your country that you left but your govt.
