How do I know If I need a new water pump on my 93' Mustang?

My 93' Mustang 5.0 over heated and broke down yesterday. Before it broke down the fan was shaking pretty violently and making noises. Whatever the fan is attached to (water pump)?? was shaking as well. A little while later the car overheated and I had to pull over. It was smoking and there was anti freeze all over under the hood. I just would like to know if It is the water pump because im sure that is something I can replace myself if that is the problem. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Sounds like the water pump, grab the fan (not running of course) and try to move it side to side, if you can and see the flange the fan is mounted to move then the pump is bad, if you see it wet under it then replace it, also you might want to put a new fan clutch on as well

Did you get a bolt out with out it breaking? If so just take that bolt to home depot, lowes, ace hardware, etc and match it up to what they have in their bolt bins/boxes. Truth be told most acc. bolts I buy at the hardware store (local ace) Like intake, water pump, fuel pump, oil pan, timing cover, etc bolts Much cheaper too. I'm a chevy guy but a packaged set of 12 intake bolts from parts store is 15 bucks and up. Its just a course thread 3/8" dia bolt.. At Ace they are 12 cents each (thats less than $1.50 for all 12 that part stores want $15 for)

Defiantly the water pump the fan is fitted directly to the pump it sounds like the bearing has collapsed damaging the seal allowing water to pass.

Very much so its the water pump. Since it it got hot you gonna need to replace the thermostat too. I know Ive been working on cars for years. So do your self a favor and replace both parts
