I know that with PS2 games, if you bought the actual Japanese version, there were often issues with compatibility. Is this true of the PS3? If I buy a game only designed for the Asian market, will I be able to use it one my US bought PS3?

yes, you can play it in your PS3
ps3 doesn't have a region lock for its game
i have play game from different region (asia, us and europe) in my PS3.
for game from japan you can play it too, but you must understand the Japanese language.
but you must remember that this is only for the PS3 game, it doesn't work for the PS2/PS game that you play on your PS3 console!!!!

No, the PS3 is region locked unless you can get a modchip (in a very near future).
