Does anyone have a good home remedy for dogs and cats that have diarrhea?

I am looking for something other than food. I won't feed my animals 'people' food because in the past THAT has given them diarrhea. I need to know of some type of medicine.

The reason I want a home remedy is because I don't want to take them to the vet.

Go to www.walkervalleyvet.com for a list of over the counter medicines that are safe for cat and dogs and the dosing amounts. Pepto bismol is safe for dogs to take but not sure about cats.
You need to ask this separately in the cat section for advice on cats.
For dogs, as long as it hasn't been going on for more than a day, or as long as it isn't chronic in nature (reappearing weekly or so) -- try feeding bulky foods like rice in a 3:1 ratio to boiled ground beef or chicken. You need to avoid fats.
Then add to this a bit of canned pumkin - not the pumpkin pie filling, just plain pumpkin. Every dog and cat I've had loves this stuff, and it's a miracle substance because it can be used for both diarrhea and constipation. Finally, depending on size of dog ,put in a teaspoon of plain yogurt every other day. This serves as a probiotic and can be done even when they don't have diarrhea.
But as I said, this is for sporadic treatment. It doesn't replace a vet visit if the diarrhea is frequent, or other symptoms are present. The fact that you don't want to take them to a vet is understandable if they're not sick. If they're sick, it sounds a bit silly.
You need to stem what causes the diarrhea in the first place. If it's just a bit of an upset digestive system for eating something that didn't agree with them, a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin (plain - not pie filling) will really help. It is easy to digest, soothes the digestive track and firms up their stools
I usually fast mine for 12 hours first to give there system a break, then give them pumpkin 2-3 times several hours apart, then gradually start working them back up to the normal amount of their regular food. If you give them too much, to quick you'll be back to square one again. It usually takes 2-3 days to get mine back to their regular meal schedule
There is no sure "remedy" for it. You can try feeding dogs the bland diet of rice and chicken for a little while but if it continues you'll need to see a vet. I don't know about cats.
If it is a constant occurrence then you need to take them to the vet and have them checked out. If it is only occasionally in your dogs then you need to make sure you are not changing the food brands a lot that is a big factor in dogs.otherwise a child's dose of pep-to bismol works fine.
