Good policy.
Great politics occured when W Bush cut taxes below what could possibly be sustained in the long run. Now if we ever have a GOOD president, they'll have to raise taxes. Republicans will scream, and it will resonate with those voters who are very shortsighted. W Bush will have almost singlehandedly set the stage so that a Republican candidate can get elected by advocating bad policy.
$450 billion we spent on the interest on the debt comes to $1500 per person in one year (2008 see wikipedia). That's almost pure waste because we pay back not a penny of the debt with that money. Only political conservatives in America and Obama think that that's a good idea. Europe, Canada, and Japan have their budget/tax policy under control We CAN'T continue to borrow more than we spend on the interest forever, and nobody will bail us out like the feds bailed out irresponsible California. Taxes must go up or someone will have to cut some spending that Reagan and two Bush's didn't (which isn't ever going to happen).
For the record I'm a moderate indy. I've been called liberal here because I'm a deficit-hawk. I don't understand that. Shouldn't conservatives be by definition the group that is responsible about handling money? Isn't calling me a liberal an admission that only liberals are responsible voters with regard to the irresponsible debt?
