I'd like to cut open the plastic battery "holder" of my dewalt 18v battery and remove the old dead nicads and install fresh li-ion cells. I'm wondering if the original charger that came with the original nicads will work after this battery modification. Does anyone know if there is a difference between a charger for a ni-cad and and li-ion battery? Thanks.

The chemistry and voltage are differnt. A NiCd charger would more than likely damage Li-Ion batteries. The charge voltage and current may be different and the cut-off points will be different. Also, a NiCd battery have a rated voltage of 1.2 volts per cell. A Li-Ion battery is rated at 3.6 volts per cell. A direct cell for cell replacement simply won't work.

Providing that you follow the same pattern of wiring the new
cells, you should have no problem. Remember, batteries do
retain a memory of their charge after a while. To maximize
battery life, discharge the batteries down to about 10% every
2 months and fully recharge them. This will add about a year
of fully charged battery life.
