How to open them to replace the battery is not as straight forward as you would think. How does one open the back of a common quartz watch to replace the battery? I hate to throw them out as they were gifts. Thanks for your help.

The best thing to do is to take them to somewhere like a local jeweller. Often enough you just have to pay for the battery and the replacement is free. Best to leave it to the people who know what they're doing anyway.

Almost any store with a jewelry counter will have batteries and the ability to replace them. Walmart does battery replacement but charges for only the battery.

I was sometimes a horology, there are so many ways to open a quartz watch if is not a waterproof you can do it by yourself by using small knife to tap it at the small open slot close to the angle.Thanks
