Can you take the FAA General exam by itself or does it have to be taken with Airframe or Powerplant?

This is for the A&P FAA certification.

I don't know about the FAA but with CASA there are first basics that need to be sat then you can sit for a type certificate either in engines or airframe. This along with a SOE allows one to be licensed. But I think we will lean towards the EASA A, B1, B2 licensing style.
