Why do Republicans claim to be the party of god?

I can't believe that any reasonable politician with a right mind would think something so ignorant in a country with both religious freedom and separation of church and state.

It began under Reagan, when the religious right was invited to the table. Bush 41 raised the volume in an early campaign speech once he had the nomination and was badly trailing Dukakis in the polls. So, Daddy Bush's writers had him angrily say "I heard the Democrats speech and they left out one small word: G. O. D. " (and then basked in the warm glow of the ovation by the religious group to whom he was vote pandering).

It's part of their simplistic divide and conquer strategy :
If the Repubes are the party of God then they can and do portray the Dems as the party of the Godless>aka communists
"Rich People"
This is so wrong that it's ridiculous
"I don't understand why atheists are so angered by our belief in a higher power. It isn't going to effect you either way. If you are right, we end up in the same place."
Historically religion has retarded the advancement of personal liberties and science
Today it's the some believers pushing their Creationism agenda and their anti -gay marriage agenda
At another time in history it was the persecution of Galileo and even earlier was burning of the libraries of Alexandria which caused much of the empirically derived knowledge of the Greeks to be lost forever.

Someone needs to be, since it's obvious that God-hating Liberals will never step up. The only things Lberals hate more than God is freedom of speech, liberty, the Constitution and America. That's the main difference between Conservatives and Liberals. Morality and Conscience. Most Liberals have neither!

They don't. But regardless, neither of your points is relevant. Religious freedom allows all Americans to espouse or not to espouse a religious faith without censure from others...which is what you are trying to do. Secondly, this is a political party, a 'club' if you will. Political parties are not government institutions. If they were to claim to be the party of God, they would be well within their rights to do so (See my comments on religious freedom).

Do you realize that freedom of religion was intended to keep the government out of church, not the church out of government? Also, it is freedom "of", not "from".

Also, Paul, I doubt Jesus would have agreed with your liberal ideals. Charitable contributions should be given willingly, not taken from the government. Without intent the contribution is meaningless morally. Also, I believe Jesus would have agreed that each individual is responsible for taking care of his/her own family, and ALSO helping people in need (willingly).

I don't understand why atheists are so angered by our belief in a higher power. It isn't going to effect you either way. If you are right, we end up in the same place.
