I recently cut back a large hydrangea plant for the winter (Indianapolis area), and about a week later, two ugly pink tubular shoots appeared together from the soil about two feet away; they look vaguely like boiled shrimp! Are these roots or rhizomes, and what, if anything, do I need to do with them? I haven't yet mulched the cut back plant.

THIS DOES SEEM UNUSUAL FOR AN HYDRANGEA, I HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE DO THIS IN THE UK, NOT AS IT SHOULD MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE WHERE ITS GROWING. IF YOU CUT IT BACK REALLY HARD I GUESS IT COULD THROW UP SOME SHOOTS TO MAKE UP FOR THE HAIR CUT IT HAS JUST RECEIVED, BEST THING IS TO KEEP AN EYE ON THEM AND SEE WHAT COMES OUT, BE INTERESTING TO KNOW THE END RESULT.
