Why does my husband's breathing sound scary when he's asleep?

He falls asleep and his breathing sounds very different, almost like he's panting, and it sounds kind of alarming. Can anyone give me a reason as to why this happens?

He has sleep disorder breathing. He should have a sleep test for specific diagnosis and treatment
