What is your favorite American city to visit, even if you've never been there and why?
Wow! Interesting answers. I'm already in California, Bay Area. 20 minutes from S.F. My all-time favorite is NYC.

The most stunningly beautiful city in the United States is San Francisco.
The most interesting city is New Orleans. (Food, people and vistas - The Mississippi River is magnificent.)
The most historical cities are Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
I have lived in 4 of the 5 cities listed above.

If you're thinking of visiting I'd suggest:
San Francisco--one of the most beautiful cities on the planet, and there's a huge amount to do within a relatively short drive.
New York--there may be more to do here than in any other city in the US. Has a cool 'the world revolves around this place' vibe you really only get in NY, London and Washington DC.
Washington DC--great museums and the aforementioned world revolves around here vibe.
Boston--Just a great city.
San Diego and Los Angeles--LA is less than perfect, but there's so much to do in SoCal that you'll still have a great time.
If you can only go to one place in the US I'd recommend California--head into SF or LA, drive along the coast, and visit Yosemite and the Grand Canyon (which is actually in Arizona).

Oak harbor washington state, Magnificent! There is a bridge that is taller than the golden gate , set in mountains , valleys rivers and streams forests and the ocean. it is an island and it has cliffs made of sand that you can jump all the way down and then hike back up. The bridge is called deception pass. There are ferry rides to Many beautiful islands with resorts on them. you can take the car or rent bicycles. There is whale watching and zoos . I am from san francisco and it does not compare in beauty. From here you can visit canada which is not far ,about an hour. I have been many places and nothing is like washington state.

I love Seattle. It is on the water, has some fantastic restaurants. The area is green, lush and beautiful after a rain. Of course it rains there a lot but it sits on a large body of water, Puget Sound. I like the pier, the seaquarium, and the general area. I haven't been there in years, but my memories are fond of that City.

Wow! San Francisco is winning this contest. It's my favorite city in the US and I've visited many. I love the hills, the architecture, the food, the capricious weather, the fog, the unique atmosphere that is San Francisco.
