it's another way of promoting their music. videos are shown on mtv channels in the same way that songs are played on the radio - it all goes toward promoting the band.
so yeah, the more often a band's video (or song) is played on the radio the more popular they become.
why do you think there's so much shite out there? because it's on tv all the bloody time people go "oh it's on the tv i must buy it" and the rest, as they say, is history.
