I have a mac with quicktime 7 on it. On the apple website it says quicktime supports avi files but when i go to play avi files a message pops up saying the movie is not in a format that quicktime understands. Why is that happening?

Download Perian for your QT, It's a component for QT and you can watch avi on it.
Usually what I will do is convert different videos so that they can fit in different situations. I convert avi to mp4 on Mac so that I can watch them on Mac

Redownload it, make sure you click all music/video files. Or a new update has been made, or needs to come out.
