why won't quicktime work?

i have a .avi file that used to play in quicktime...then i reinstalled my mac and now it wont work...why?

    There are many reasons why but most commonly it's the codec that the AVI was made with. You might have had a third party codec component installed previously and now, after re-install, you don't. If you can, try to open the file again (does anything happen? Is it just a blank window or does the file just not open at all?) try and do a "get info" from the file, it might tell you which codec the AVI file was produced in.

    you may have to convert it to MP4 or MPEG4 format in order to play on macs now
