Replacing the starter in a 1985 300sd?

Mercedes Benz 300SD starter r&r questions?
The car died. It would glow, but turn the switch to start and nothing - no noise or anything. The tow truck driver came out and after a jump didn't fix it, he pounded on something under the hood from the top. It worked. The car started with no problem. He said, and a mechanic agreed, that it needed a new starter. The mechanic said it was a tough job, as there was something that had to be removed to get at the starter. (He wanted 2-3 hrs labor) I looked at it from the top and if I'm looking at the starter, it doesn't look too hard.
1. What did the tow truck driver pound on?
2. Is the starter unobstructed and easy (well relatively) to remove and replace?

1 He probably pounded on the starter itself. the Bendix was probably stuck.

2)  You have to work  from underneath the car. If I remember correctly, you'll need a set of metric allen sockets to loosen it up. On some models, you need to remove the front exhaust pipe, which shouldn't be a big deal.

As Any mechanic would do is start on square 1  then go to square 2 and so forth. sq. 1 is the battery and or connectors. make certin both are **** up! if not you could buy a starter and still have same problem. Next, When some dude beats on your ride make sure you know what hes doing ...ok?  And finally the job  is a piece of cake. with right tools, pactience, and a manual.  Remember Square 1 etc.
