A psychologist is a mental health professional that helps people deal with life issues, trauma, phobias and mental disorders. They are a doctor without the legal right to prescribe medication unlike a psychiatrist. They study psychological theories, and use behavior modification strategies in order to give advise to a person about their specific issue. They are able to diagnose someone with a mental illness and provide strategies on how to cope with the illness and/or trauma.

Many people go to a psychologist to discuss life problems such as marriage or childhood trauma but others go because they feel "off" or "not-normal." For instance, they might hear voices, have hallucinations or strong compulsions that they cannot deal with or handle. These individuals may be in need of psychotic medications and advise on how to deal with their mental health issue, which a psychologist can provide and then refer to a psychiatrist for meds.

Someone that helps insecure people deal with their problems.

If someone had a fear, they can can go to a psychiatrist to help get over it. (i was dead scared of bees, a week with a psychuiatrist and bees don't bother me anymore! best money I ever spent)
