Can my buddy and I (both enlisted in the U.S. Army) stay on a base during a vacation?
Hi, this may sound like a really stupid question but oh well. My friend and I are enlisting in the Army in a month or so (regardless of the answer to this question) but we're also going on vacation in the summer 2011 to ST. Petersburg in Russia, Moscow, Berlin, and Frankfurt. There are military bases in or near each so we were wondering whether it was possible that we stay on base for a few days and save some cash.

You can typically report to the base's casual company and if they have space available they will let you stay in that barracks.
Have your company's clerk check with the other bases to make sure that they have the room for you.

The odds are not real good at any of those locations. There NEVER have been any US installations in the USSR or the current Russia.
Berlin and the Frankfurt area had all those Kasernes closed a few years ago. Frankfurt is about 1/4 inch right of Weisbaden.
3 of us drove to England in 1975 and tried to get into Transient Barracks at a US Air Base. We ended up sleeping in the car in a spot along the fence that the Security Forces said would be OK.
You and your buddy getting leave at the same time is not good either.
First off, if you are enlisting this summer, you may not be going anywhere next summer if you don't have the leave time available, still in school (didn't mention your MOS or how long AIT is for it), if your command doesn't approve the leave, or if you are deployed, preparing for a deployment, or any other of a number of reasons. The U.S. has no bases in Russia, some in Germany though. Yes, you can stay on base, most have a hotel. You will have to pay just like any other place, but the rates may be cheaper. You are not going to get quarters at another base though, summer time is PCS time for many people and those extra rooms are going to most often be reserved for them. The most leave you will normally be allowed to take at one time is 30 days, but most units don't allow you to take that much outside of block leave times (when the entire unit is scheduled to take leave), so figure that into your equations too.
