Can my buddy and I (both enlisted in the U.S. Army) stay on a base during a vacation?
Hi, this may sound like a really stupid question but oh well. My friend and I are enlisting in the Army in a month or so (regardless of the answer to this question) but we're also going on vacation in the summer 2011 to ST. Petersburg in Russia, Moscow, Berlin, and Frankfurt. There are military bases in or near each so we were wondering whether it was possible that we stay on base for a few days and save some cash.

You can typically report to the base's casual company and if they have space available they will let you stay in that barracks.
Have your company's clerk check with the other bases to make sure that they have the room for you.

The odds are not real good at any of those locations. There NEVER have been any US installations in the USSR or the current Russia.
Berlin and the Frankfurt area had all those Kasernes closed a few years ago. Frankfurt is about 1/4 inch right of Weisbaden.
3 of us drove to England in 1975 and tried to get into Transient Barracks at a US Air Base.
We ended up sleeping in the car in a spot along the fence that the Security Forces said would be OK.
You and your buddy getting leave at the same time is not good either.

First off, if you are enlisting this summer, you may not be going anywhere next summer if you don't have the leave time available, still in school (didn't mention your MOS or how long AIT is for it), if your command doesn't approve the leave, or if you are deployed, preparing for a deployment, or any other of a number of reasons. The U.S. has no bases in Russia, some in Germany though. Yes, you can stay on base, most have a hotel. You will have to pay just like any other place, but the rates may be cheaper. You are not going to get quarters at another base though, summer time is PCS time for many people and those extra rooms are going to most often be reserved for them. The most leave you will normally be allowed to take at one time is 30 days, but most units don't allow you to take that much outside of block leave times (when the entire unit is scheduled to take leave), so figure that into your equations too.

You are both not in the Army yet. So the answer that I'm going to give you might not seem logical to you right now. You would have to actually experience military life to get the full drift of my answer. And it is: In any branch, ANY BRANCH of the military, when you have a pass/liberty (time off to go and do whatever you want) or when you have a furlough/leave (vacation time), you do only one thing first with that time. And that one thng is to GET OUT OF THE AREA. ASAP. You don't hang around base; you don't hang around the barracks. You go. And there really is not enough space on this site to tell you why. But ask your question to some veterans, and tell them what I just said, they will elaborate. Lots of luck to both of you.

Wait....you know that you aren't going to be in training or deployed in the summer of 2011? Um, I would put a big hold on those plans till you both know you are going to get leave to go on this vacation.
To answer your question, as long as it is a US military base(doesn't matter what branch) and there is lodging available then yes you can. But lodging is usually reserved for families that are PCSing and the summer time is a big PCS time. So I wouldn't bank on it.
I would look into hostels for a back up.

In general the answer is yes. If a base is not restricted, meaning you can get on it with your standard ID card, and it has available lodging you can stay. Being on vacation you would have the lowest priority. Soldiers on official business get first dibs. But we don't have bases near or in St. Pete and Moscow. In Germany you won't stay in base lodging because we don't have that set up in Europe. You can arrange to stay at some of our military hotels such as the Edelweiss in Garmisch.

Moscow is one of the largest cities in the world. Is really a town that has developed quickly in recent ages, and, as a result, comprises high-rise suburbs bordering a relatively small historical middle with plenty of intriguing historical architecture. The most important place of Moscow is the Red Square that's been for centuries, one's heart and heart of Russia. Here, you are able to go to the Century St. Basil's Cathedral, one of the most famous pieces of architecture on the planet and the constructivist pyramid of Lenin's Mausoleum. Red Square is surely a rich place in icons of Russia's turbulent and exciting past.
