Did the USAF give up on a plane that shoots downs missiles with laser beams, or did they just retire the test bed?

    Don't know about the Air Force and their practicality,  but the tests were extremely successful on Navy ships, and I can tell you, that several ships have installed the equipment.   Up and running.

    the USA had a C130 Bomber Bombs carried out side12 x 500 Lb   a Vulcan Gun on the Ramp and a downward Firing Bofors Gun in the Fuselage

    Ideal for destroying Moving Vehicles day and Night

    prooved it worked in Vietnam and then Hid

    Probably in area 51

    According to statements from the Air Force at the time, it was discontinued as non-viable.

    That doesn't mean the system wouldn't work in space, or from some other unmanned craft.  Just not from a manned airplane.
