My brother's background check took 4 days and he was notified that day by the employer. That said, I think it would be ok to call and just check in so they remember you. Be sure you sound patient and you were just checking on the status of the background check, it won't hurt your chances to call. They wouldn't decide to not hire you over it. But I don't think they are blowing you off quite yet.

They actual "check" takes less than 5 minutes. A name is entered into the database and it is checked against courthouse records and credit records. Sometimes there is a 2nd attempt to guard against spelling or typing errors.
The delay comes from the backlog of applicants for any job. There are always too many applicants. So employers use the "background check" as the reason for the delays. If they needed the check to be done in 4 hours, it would be possible.

Sometimes, a background check can take a long time to get back. They have to request information from the county court in every place you have lived, and some courts drag their heels when it comes to releasing information. Some courts won't release anything without a signed consent form from you.

If the employer doesn't call you by Monday, it wouldn't hurt to call and ask if your background check has come back. If they are spending the money to run a background check, it means that they are at least somewhat interested in you.

The background check really only takes minutes and a few clicks, but of course the actual time frame would depend on the backlog, number of checks to be done, printing, reporting, mailing, etc. Maximum would be a week.. you could try to call and follow up your application.. but try giving it until the end of the week..
